Week of October 25

Kindergarten Connection

Your child's week with Mrs. DeLapa

                         Last Week

I have heard great things about last week from Mrs. Caplea and Mr. Russell. I feel blessed to have had both of them particularly with the sub shortage educators are finding these days. These are 2 of my favorite guest teachers to be sure.

I heard from Mr. Russell that the Fall Festival was loads of fun! Thanks so much to our parent volunteers for making this happen. We surely could not have done it without you. If any of you took some pictures of the party, please post them on our Brown School Facebook page.

The children’s October Book-It forms are beginning to come in. (they are on the back of our homework calendars) Great job reading at home! Once I get the completed form, I will send it back with a certificate for a free pizza from Pizza Hut. Please be sure that your child’s name is on the bottom of the Book-It form.

We have been working on analyzing characters in Daily 5 this week. See if your child can analyze one in a story at home. Check to see if he/she can tell you the Main Idea, setting and whether it is Fiction or Non-fiction☺.

The week of 10/18 we had our first Reader’s Theater unit in Language Arts. The children learned to read "With My Family"

through sight word work and choral reading (reading together several times). The book came home on Friday, 10/22. Please

keep this and subsequent others in a safe spot so your child can read them often. Every 3 weeks your child will add to his/her library of books he/she can read from our ELA curriculum. Additional books will come home as well from time to time. Then read, read, read!!

P2 Character Strength-Perspective

Monday, 11/1 is our Picture retake day. If you would like retakes for your child, please return your complete photo package

on Monday. Also, anyone absent on our first picture day will have photos taken on this day. I think Sam was the only one

absent on that day.

Our next guest reader, Mrs. Wells, will arrive at 3:20 on Wednesday, November 3rd. Please bring

2-3 books with you to read. There are many open dates on the schedule. Please find one that works for you on the Guest

reader document I have shared with you. (If you can’t find it, please ask) DeLapa Guest Reader Sign Up Sheet

I will be back to school on Thursday and look forward to being with my kiddos. As of this typing, our little one has yet to arrive! I guess he or she is not in any hurry. My daughter will be induced early Sunday morning so we pray that Sunday will be the day. 💕

On Friday expect a fun home activity in your child’s folder. As Thanksgiving approaches we would love to see some creativity in disguising a turkey. Please return by 11/12.

Upcoming Events

Just a reminder that, next Thursday and Friday, 11/11 and 11/12, will be ½ days for conferences.

Monday, November 15th will be our 50th Day Celebration. The committee will be contacted this week. I have all the supplies except the snack items. How can it almost be our 50th day already??

Tuesday, November 16th will be our Brown School Thanksgiving luncheon.  This is a great time for us to all eat together and consider all we are thankful for. This is for the students only, but be on the look out for requests for volunteers. Many are needed for this event☺.

We also have a ½ day on Friday, November 19th as we finish our 1st trimester.

Our Thanksgiving break is Wednesday, 11/24 through Friday, 11/26.

Week of October 11

Kindergarten Connection

Your child's week with Mrs. DeLapa

                         Last Week

Our trip to Dinges Farm was so fun! The weather could not have been better and the children loved it! A huge thank you goes out to all our parent chaperones for this trip. We appreciate you so much!

I enjoyed meeting with all of you very much last week. Thank you for your attention to punctuality and your willingness to attend. I love this time together talking about our kiddos and how we can make this school year as enjoyable and productive as possible for each of them.

Just a reminder that the students must wear gym shoes each Friday. Even on 1/2 days, we will have gym class.

Daily 5 has been going great. Our Stamina is increasing and the children are making good choices of which of the 5 to choose. “Listen to Reading,” is going well. We know that children learn through modeling, so much importance is placed upon them hearing books read well. That is why it is so important that you read daily to your child at home (aside from it being a great time to snuggle and bond at the end of the day ☺).

After reading a story to your child, ask him/her to identify the main idea for you. Once that is established, see how many details he/she can list for you. You might even ask if the book is fiction or nonfiction. You may be surprised at how much your kindergartner can tell you.

Last week I sent home a sheet telling how to help your child login to Lexia Core 5. This is a wonderful, fun program the

district has purchased for all our elementary students. Everyone has taken the placement test here at school and is ready to

use this program at home. We will continue to use this at school, but would like for each student to spend time on it at home

as well each week. Please read the letter completely to get a good understanding of how it works. It is important that your

child works without any help while using Core 5. This way I can see where help is needed for additional instruction.

I think you will agree that it is a great addition to our learning ☺.

Never hesitate to email me (ldelapa@stjoebears.com) with any questions you may have regarding any of our

“kindergarten stuff.”

Next Week

There will be no school for students on Monday, 10/18 due to Teacher In-service.

Tuesday is Donuts with My Main Character @ 7:45 on the school playground - please join us!

Please return the signed Hearing and Vision form that was sent home on Friday asap. Testing is on Wednesday, Thursday. and Friday. This is a wonderful service for our students. The techs do a great job and will have results to you soon after testing. If the results are normal you will not hear from them. So...no news is good news 😊.

Our next Guest Reader, Mrs. Fitzpatrick, will arrive at 3:20 on Wednesday, October 20th. Please bring

2-3 books with you to read. There are many open dates on the schedule. Please find one that works for you on the Guest

reader document I have shared with you. (If you can’t find it, please ask) DeLapa Guest Reader Sign Up Sheet

We still have several students who are not able to pull coat sleeves right side out and put on jackets independently. Please

spend some time working on this skill with your child. It is one of those benchmarks the children are proud to master.

Upcoming Events

Our Fall Festival will be on Friday, October 29th. Parents are just beginning to plan for a great time ☺. The children should wear costumes to school the day of the party (this is different from other years). Be sure to keep in mind your child's ability to use the restroom throughout the day in his/her chosen costume. Please keep all of our Kindergartners in mind when choosing the costume for your child. There should be no costumes worn that might scare the children. Let’s keep our wholesome environment in mind and be sure all are comfortable and able to enjoy the day. If you have any question about your choice, please ask. The kindergarten classes will not be participating in the Halloween parade. We have found that some of the costumes can be scary and we can look forward to more time for our party ☺.

Week of October 4th

Kindergarten Connection

Your child's week with Mrs. DeLapa

                         Last Week

What a fun week it has been. Friday was a blast with our "Bucks for Brown" celebration! The weather was perfect and we had
so much fun! Thank you to our entire Brown family for all the time, talent, effort and resources you contributed to this day and to our PTO fund raising effort! That is why we are called the little school with the big heart ❤.

For all who have submitted a volunteer sheet, the volunteer list for trips and parties was sent to you last week.

Please let me know if you did not receive it or if your contact info is incorrect. Thank you for your willingness to help.

Tuesday morning is our trip to Dinges Farm. As of right now, the weather looks perfect! Please be sure to dress you child for the weather (which may include boots). We will still go if it is drizzling, but hopefully that won't be the case. I have sent maps

to the parents who are assigned to chaperone this trip. The cost for students is covered, but parents will be charged $4 at the farm. We will meet you there around 9:15. Thank you for adhering to the schedule.

I now have everyone scheduled for a conference with me. Thank you for prioritizing this time for your child. We are a team in

his/her learning this year. It is important that we work together to make this the best year possible for your child with optimum

learning. I look forward to my time with you all.

During Daily 5, our language arts time, we are learning to identify the main idea and supporting details of a story. See if

your child can identify these things in a story read at home. I think you will be surprised.

In Science for the Weather Watching unit we will talk about how the weather changes with the seasons. We will use what the weather is like on their birthdays to make this point clear to them. We use Mystery Science as a curriculum. We all love it!

Next Week

The biggest news next week is that we are adding a new student to our class!! We are all very excited to welcome Emerson Osborn to join our school family. The children can not wait to meet our new friend and help him to feel comfortable here at Brown. As highlighted above this will make our total enrollment 25 children for snacks.

Next week we will continue to work on the skills of identifying main idea and supporting details using the book, What Are Some Rules At Home? Ask your child if the rules we are reading about in school are the same as some you have at home.

We have ½ days on Thursday and Friday, 10/14, 15, due to parent teacher conferences. Dismissal time is 12:09. I will see you all then 😊.

Our next Guest Reader, Mrs. Chynoweth, will arrive at 3:20 on Wednesday, October 13th. Please bring

2-3 books with you to read. There are many open dates on the schedule. Please find one that works for you on the Guest

reader document I have shared with you. (If you can’t find it, please ask) DeLapa Guest Reader Sign Up Sheet

Please continue to work on pulling jacket sleeves right side out and zipping. The boys and girls feel so good about

themselves when they can do these things independently. A couple quick sessions, and they will have it! Thank you.

Upcoming Events

There will be no school for students on Monday, 10/18 due to Teacher In-service.

A very important upcoming event in our family is that our 5th grandchild is due to arrive October 25th! My daughter Sarah and

family live in Memphis, TN. They do not have family there so I will be going to help and support them and our 2 wonderful

granddaughters (age 6 and 15 months) during and after the he or she arrives. While I am away, 10/25-11/3, Mrs. Caplea and

Mr. Russell will be teaching our class. They both have met/taught the children and are great, guest teachers. In fact,

Mrs. Caplea was a kindergarten teacher before she decided to be a stay at home mom. I am happy to answer any questions

about this during our conference this week.

Our Fall Festival will be on Friday, October 29th. The children may bring costumes to school that day for the party. Please

keep all of our Kindergartners in mind when choosing the costume for your child. There should be no costumes worn that

might scare the children or masks worn. Let’s keep our wholesome environment in mind and be sure all are comfortable and

able to enjoy the day. If you have any questions about your choice, please ask.
