Weeks of November 22 and 29

Kindergarten Connection

Your child's week with Mrs. DeLapa

Last Week

Probably the most exciting part of our week was watching the new playground installation! It has been fun seeing the progress from recess to recess, let alone day to day. We can't wait until it is finished so everyone can try it out. How fun to be able to say that we watched this great play area come to be. 😀

Thank you to the parents who came to help with our 50th Day party. We had fun eating 50 pieces of snack, drawing 50 objects, making a 50th day hat, writing to 50, playing 50 Bingo and coloring 50 shapes. Whew, we understand now that 50 is a lot!

Our Thanksgiving lunch was delicious on Tuesday!! We are grateful for all the grown-ups who came to help serve and clean up for our feast 😋.

On Thursday our Unit 2 Math books and 1st Journals came home. Have your child read the journal to you. You should be able to see a nice progression in his/her writing.

On Wednesday each classroom had a "Play It Safe" presentation from The Children's Advocacy Center about safe touch. It was well done and age appropriate for our students. A coloring sheet and small book came home Wednesday too. Be sure to read through it with your child to solidify these important concepts and answer any questions he/she may have.

Please keep working on those Sight Words daily. It makes a huge difference as we move closer and closer to becoming readers.

Thanks for the great participation with the disguised Turkeys! What creativity was shown! Many have enjoyed them as they pass our classroom.  For those of you who have not returned one, there is still plenty of room on our bulletin boards. I’m happy to send another turkey home as well.

Next Week

Your child will come home with his/her progress report on Tuesday. Please keep the report, sign the envelope and return it to school asap. Those envelopes will be used all year to deliver progress reports to you. All the grades are given with our "end of the year" goal in mind. Please do not be concerned if your child receives a 1 or 2 on a standard. 1 means additional support is needed in that area, 2 means progressing towards mastery of the standard and 3 means the standard has been met. If you have any questions or concerns after receiving the progress report, please contact me.

Our Thanksgiving break is Wed.-Fri., 11/24-26. Enjoy this special time with family and friends.

Our next Guest Reader, Mrs. Schueneman will arrive at 3:20 on Wednesday, December 1st. Please bring 2-3 books with you

to read. There are many open dates on the schedule. Please find one that works for you on the Guest reader document I have

shared with you. (If you can’t find it, please ask) DeLapa Guest Reader Sign Up Sheet

According to the weather report, winter weather is here to stay. lease be sure to have your child practice putting on and

taking off all snow gear. Labeling winter items is extremely important, so please take the time to put your child’s

name on everything. Thanks so much! Also, please know that all children go out to recess. There are no

accommodations for inside recess when all are out. PLEASE send proper clothing for the cold weather.

Upcoming Events

December 1 and 2-Brown School Holiday Shoppe. Your child will have the option of buying loved ones gifts. More information to come in Mrs. Bawks/PTO blogs.

December 6-10-Brown School Library Book Fair. Great books at great prices available.

On Wednesday, December we will make Gingerbread houses in our room. The first week of December, I will send home

a note regarding this asking for donations to decorate our houses. If you are able, please send your assigned item anytime

before that day, but not later than Dec. 13th (so I can supplement if necessary).I would love to have 6 parents help on this day. We will begin set up at 2:15 that afternoon. Please let me know if you

are able to join us that day.

Friday, December 17th we will have our Winter/New Year, New You Party. This party will be in the morning due to other

Brown School activities in the afternoon.

Week of November 15th

Kindergarten Connection

Your child's week with Mrs. DeLapa

Last Week

It was wonderful to be back with your children last week! We were all so happy to be together. From the children's reports, it sounds like things went well and the learning continued nicely in my absence. We are blessed with some amazing guest teachers at Brown, that's for sure!

I am happy and filled with gratitude to report that my grandson Zachary is home with his parents and 2 big sisters now. All are doing well and enjoying figuring out how to be a family of 5. Thank you for the many notes of concern and support. ðŸ˜Š

Just a reminder that we now have 25 students in our class. Hopefully we will have everyone back next week so we will need 25 items for snack. Thank you!

I worked on assessments last week in preparation for our 1st trimester progress reports. We will finish up with that this week. Grades will be submitted by Monday, 11/22 and sent home on Wednesday or Thursday with your child. All the grades are given with our "end of the year" goal in mind. Please do not be concerned if your child receives a 1 or 2 for a standard. 1 means additional support is needed in that area, 2 means progressing towards mastery of the standard and 3 means the standard has been met. If you have any questions or concerns after receiving the progress report, please contact me.

On Friday your child came home with a zip lock bag and his/her first set of Sight words. Please help your child to cut them out and keep them in the bag and handy for frequent practicing. You may have noticed that these words come from our Readers' Theater books that your child has brought home. New sight words will be added as we read new readers' theater books. Learning them as we go is definitely the best way to go.

Stuff a Truck: Please consider sending in non-perishable food items (typically boxes and cans) to donate to those in need during the holiday season. Brown School Student Council has organized this food drive with Berrien County partnerships. Donations accepted this week only, now through Friday 11/19.

Never hesitate to email me (ldelapa@stjoebears.com) with any questions you may have regarding any of our

“kindergarten stuff.”

Monday, 11/15 is our 50th Day of School! We will celebrate with a party that afternoon learning what 50 of something really looks like. Be sure to ask your child what he/she did in each center about the number 50 😀.

Your child will bring home work from our first Writers' Workshop unit, Label and List on Monday. We began our next unit, Pattern Books last week. This is one of the students' favorite units. I love it too. This is when they really begin to believe that they can be and are authors.

Tuesday, 11/16 is our Thanksgiving Luncheon. This is for students only, but we need lots of volunteers to make it happen. See Mrs. Bawks' blog for volunteer opportunities for this event.

Friday, 11/19 is a 1/2 day for end of our 1st trimester.

Our next Guest Reader, Mrs. Sprayberry (Hazel's grandma), will arrive at 3:20 on Wednesday, November 17th. Please bring

reader document I have shared with you. (If you can’t find it, please ask) DeLapa Guest Reader Sign Up Sheet

Now that the cold weather has arrived, please be sure to dress your child appropriately each day. We will go out for 3

recesses each day unless it is raining or the temperature is 10 degrees (real feel) or lower. Please label each item of clothing

with your child's name. That small step makes all the difference between finding or not finding lost items. Please spend

time practicing putting on and off our outdoor play clothing. Thank you so much!

Week of November 8th

Kindergarten Connection

Your child's week with Mrs. DeLapa

                         Last Week

Well, it worked out to be a different week than I anticipated for us all. I hear our students did a wonderful job going with the

flow. We had some wonderful guest teachers that taught and cared for them well. I am so grateful for that, but I am so excited

to be with them Monday morning!!

My grandson, Zachary, is still in the NICU but is doing much better. What a blessing those doctors and nurses have been!

When a couple of them heard that I was going to return home without seeing him, they bent the rules one night to let me go

in for 4-5 minutes. A friend of Sarah's came to sit with the girls while they slept and I zipped to the hospital. I was not able

to touch him (which was so fine), but I got to see him in person. We all were so thankful.

On Monday, Ms. Mack (our music teacher) is going to video our class singing for our Brown School Thanksgiving luncheon. Usually we sing in person for both lunches, but this year due to 3 lunches and other factors, a video will be shown. You are welcome to have your child dress up a bit if you like. It is not necessary but if your child would like to it is fine.

We have ½ days on Thursday and Friday, 11/11, 12, due to parent teacher conferences. Dismissal time is 12:09.

Our next Guest Reader, Mr. Lattak, will arrive at 3:20 on Wednesday, November 10th. Please bring
