Week of September 20th

Kindergarten Connection

Your child's week with Mrs. DeLapa

                         Announcements

Aside from a few make-ups, we have completed our NWEA fall testing. Our kiddos did a nice job of staying focused and following directions. This is strictly a baseline and also a first for these students. The results will come home with progress reports at the end of the Trimester.

On Friday we had our first guest teacher, Mr. Russell. I was able to assess each child one on one covering upper and lowercase letters and their sounds, rhyming, concepts of print, counting and writing to 10. I love this time with the children and they get to show me what they know.

It has been fun getting the hang of Table and Math Centers in our room. The children are making good choices and enjoying the experiences. Table centers reinforce skills from any of our curriculum areas. Be sure to ask your child what he/she did during center time.

Some of the children have turned in their September homework calendar and have made the trip to the

“Treasure Chest.” Please sign and return the calendar once your child has finished at least 3 items per week.

Your child brought his/her first Library book home on Tuesday. Please encourage careful use of the book.

Mrs. Bacolor taught us that we should treat our books as if they are babies. Books will always be due back for exchange

on Tuesdays. You are welcome to return the books early if you like. We have a crate in our room for them.

Please, please label all things and clothing coming to school. Also, please empty your child’s take folder each day.

Thank you!

Never hesitate to email me (ldelapa@stjoebears.com) with any questions you may have regarding any of our

“kindergarten stuff.”

Next Week Events

On Tuesday Mr. Russell will return as a guest teacher (the kiddos really enjoyed him Friday). My husband is in a Clinical trial at the University of Chicago for Multiple Myeloma, a form of cancer. He is doing well right now which we are grateful for. We need to go there for testing and an appointment on Tuesday. We look forward to hearing good news!

It is Picture Day on Wednesday, 10/29! The forms went home on Friday. All students will have their pictures taken that day. If you would like to purchase some, please send your picture envelope back to school by Wed., 10/29 (you are welcome to send it earlier if you like. You may also pay online. If you pay online, please send me a note or email stating that you have paid online. I can't wait to see those smiles 😊.

Our event/leader calendar (placed in the back pocket of your child’s folder) and the October homework calendar will come home this week. Please refer to this for leader days, specials and special events. On the back of the homework side is our Book-It calendar. Please color an acorn for each book or 20 minutes you have read with your child and he/she will get a certificate for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut!

We will have our first Guest Reader next cycle. Mrs. Bishop will come at 3:20 on Wednesday, September 29th. Please bring

2-3 books with you to read. There are many open dates on the schedule. Please find one that works for you on the Guest

reader document I have shared with you. (If you can’t find it, please ask) DeLapa Guest Reader Sign Up Sheet

I would like some help with 2 readiness areas to aide in a quick exit to recess each day once the weather becomes cooler.

Please work with your child on pulling jacket sleeves right side out and zipping. The boys and girls feel so good about

themselves when they can do these things independently. A couple quick sessions, and they will have it! Thank you.

Background checks MUST be submitted for any volunteer working throughout our school environment or with our

students on field trips.  This includes guest readers, party volunteers, etc. Please stop in the office to get a form to complete.  I am happy to send a form home with your child too. Just let me know. Please note: it could take up to two weeks to receive clearance.

Week of September 13th

Kindergarten Connection

Your child's week with Mrs. DeLapa

                         Announcements

It has been great getting to know routines and procedures better each day in our room and school. The children are fast learners and are doing well. What a great group I have!!

We actually had our first Fire Drill on Friday. I was pleased with how well the children took it seriously and followed directions. We will practice a Tornado Drill next week.

We have been to each special and are comfortable with the process and teachers. Brown is blessed with wonderful teachers who love their specialty and pass that love on to the students. This week we went to the Media Center for the first time. This first time we have kept the books in our classroom (they have them in their book boxes). We have read them during the week and discussed good book care. Next Tuesday and beyond, the children will bring them home for the week. We have a wonderful assortment of books in our library that I’m sure your family will enjoy.

We have worked on the computers twice and are beginning to get the hang of them. Logging in is difficult, but can be done with practice. All of the students were able to take the placement test for Core 5 and can now begin to work at their levels in Language Arts.

Please make sure to look in your child’s folder every day and remove notes. Important papers and work are sent home often.

The folder is a great way to send back notes to me as well. I have the children check their folders every morning.

Never hesitate to email me (ldelapa@stjoebears.com) with any questions you may have regarding any of our “kindergarten stuff.”

Next Week Events

Wednesday, 9/22, is a Late Start. We will begin school exactly 1 hour later than usual at 9:25. The buses will pick up 1 hour later than usual as well.

We will take both portions of the NWEA standardized test next week on our Chromebooks. Our Language Arts part will be taken on Monday and the Math will be on Thursday. This is solely to get a baseline for the children. I will keep it very low key to avoid nervousness. The results show me how I can best teach and move each student forward.

I will also be assessing each student individually on Friday of this week. I will have a substitute teacher so that I can meet with each child one on one. I really enjoy this time and appreciate that this data allows me to better meet the needs of each student.

We will add “Work on Writing to our Daily 5 choices this cycle. I am so proud of how well the children are doing with "Read to Self." They are great independent workers.

Here is the link to our Guest Reader schedule. There are many spots available. Please feel free to add your name on a date that works for you. We enjoy having loved ones come to read. DeLapa Guest Reader Sign Up Sheet

Week of September 6th

Kindergarten Connection

Your child's week with Mrs. DeLapa

                         Announcements

It has been a great first week of school with our phase-in schedule! Thank you for all your help with this transition for your child. Beginning on Monday, we will all be together from here on out! I'm anxious to have everyone meet each other and begin to build our community. I can see already that we have a wonderful group and will have a great year together!

This week all students will meet all our specials teachers. Music-Mrs. McElroy (Miss Mac) Gym-Mr. Pfahler, Art-Mrs. Warsow, Library-Mrs. Bacolor, and Social Emotional Learning-Mrs. VanHekken.

The children are doing a great job washing hands/sanitizing, wearing masks, and traveling in one direction down the hallways. Learning routines and procedures for Brown School and our classroom is going well too.

If you dare, take a look at the Big Green Monsters we made last week in the hallway outside our room. We had loads of fun with these and love that each is so unique.

Our classroom is decorated by all the beautiful, carefully chosen, names of your children. We learned that our name was the first gift our parents ever gave us from the book, Chrysanthemum ☺.

Please make sure to look in your child’s folder every day and remove notes. Important papers and work are sent home often.

The folder is a great way to send back notes to me as well. I have the children check their folders every morning.
